Rides

Our Ride Ethos - We're all about safety, fun, improving fitness and comradeship. Group riding is about learning/experiencing riding with other cyclists around you.

If you are looking for ultra competitive riding and racing, there are probably other groups that would better suit your needs, but please get in touch to discuss what you're after. During the last third of the ride, some riders may wish to increase tempo, but no-one will be left to ride home alone (unless they are winning!!).

Riding Groups

Group 1 - Ferrets

Lithe, athletic, difficult to catch and harder to like

Fast: 30+ km/hr average

Group 2 - Silver Foxes

Well rounded individuals, born to ride semi-hard

Not So Fast: 27+ km/hr average

Group 3 - Komodo Dragons

Surprisingly quick, sharp tongued assassins who strike early then wait for you to fade before moving in for the kill

Middle Range: 24+ km/hr average

Group 4 - Wise Owls

They know that a straight line is the shortest distance to the coffee shop

Leisure: < 24 km/hr average

Wednesday Rides

PEDDLERS' ROAD RIDE - NEW START TIME 6:00PM
Meet at the Matamata Primary School flagpole at 5:55pm sharp. The ride route and groups will be determined on the day. You must have a rear light as a minimum but we strongly advise that you have both a front light and a rear light. We'll be back in town before it gets too dark.

NEW WEDNESDAY EVENING RIDE - PEDDLERS' FAMILY RAIL TRAIL RIDE - START TIME 4:25PM
Meet at the Matamata Primary School flagpole at the kid-friendly time of 4:15pm to get organised. Great for Mum, Dad and the kids! Electric bikes welcome! Get Kelly and Bud off the couch and join us for a trip out and back along the new rail trail for 45 minutes to an hour! There's no set distance, so you can turn around when you feel like it, but it's a great way to get out there and ride with Peddlers as a family (kids must be accompanied by Peg, Al or a guardian). We'll be back before 5:30 in case any members of the family want to do the road ride.

Sunday Rides

START TIME 9:00AM
The Sunday morning rides leave from Matamata Primary School flagpole on Broadway at 09:00am. Please be there 5 minutes before the ride is due to start for a quick ride briefing prior to departure. Please refer to the Location Maps page for the start location.

THE MORGAN GRINDER
Who sets these rides?! What's with all the hills?!. A great advertisement for electric bikes, this one will make you sweat out that February feasting and really earn that cold drink at RH. It'a a bit like a blind date. You go into it with a little bit of hope, but your heart sinks when you meet them, then 10 minutes after you started you wish you were having your back waxed by a naked sumo wrestler covered in jelly and sawdust singing "Mickey", by Toni Basil. Halfway through it, you find out there's no alcohol in your drink (bottle) and a night of unbridled passion with your mother-in-law seems a pleasant distraction. By the end, as you pull into Robert Harris and struggle to slot your bike into the bike stand (when did my bike get so HEAVY??) 73 minutes after everyone else arrived, you'll wish that you had instead decided to go to a Labour Party Youth conference, just for the conversation. Still, people keep telling me it's good for me, but I must confess that I only half listen, because they're only half my bloody weight and they've had 73 more minutes at the cafe than me. Stop telling me what's good for me. If I'd wanted self-righteous pr1ck5 telling me what to do I'd have gone to the afore-mentioned conference! See you Sunday

BUNGY'S JUMP
We spring back onto the Lower Kaimais this week! Bounce your butt out of bed and plunge headlong into the Old Te Aroha Gorge, where the Great Chasm of Bungard awaits! Dont worry though, you'll be snapped back up to the top of the hill like an asymptomatic German tourist in Queenstown, faster than you can say "mein arsen hurten". From there you'll be stretched out over the Manawaru Plains like the neck of a balloon - and making a similar noise. Back at the cafe I'm sure you'll agree, Bungy will leave you cored. Right, that's enough elastic jokes, any more and I'll be (rubber) banned. If I'm honest they're starting to repeat on me anyway

Kiwitahi Mahi
Let's make sweet West Country music this weekend! The Tahis are off to Scotsman's Valley, where they'll be blowing like bagpipes, whilst everyone else is rockin' and rollin' around Kiwitahi. I could be whistling Dixie, but I'll bet it won't be just Johnny Cash who's got a burning ring of fire come lunchtime! Robert Harris will be filled with the smell of melted lycra when the band gets back together for some American Pie - (for replacement kit going for a song, please see the Apparel page). That's a rap.
